The world of historical building sets has just gotten a thrilling new addition, and it’s perfect for those passionate about ancient history and detailed model construction. COBI has recently announced the release of their latest model, the Roman Onager (set number 20068), as part of their Imperium Romanum series. This set marks a return to the glory of the Roman Empire, bringing a piece of history right to your fingertips.

A Brief History of COBI's Roman Empire Sets

COBI, a Polish company known for its detailed and historically accurate building block sets, has a long-standing tradition of creating models that pay homage to different eras of history. While COBI is widely recognized for its extensive range of World War I and II models, they have also ventured into the ancient world with their Romans and Barbarians series, which debuted several years ago. This series included sets like the Roman Ballista and various minifigure packs that brought the clash of civilizations to life through detailed brick constructions.

The Imperium Romanum series is a continuation of this theme, and it focuses on the might of Rome at its peak. With the Roman Onager set, COBI revisits the ingenious military engineering of ancient Rome, offering a model that is both educational and entertaining.

The Roman Onager (20068): A Closer Look

The Roman Onager is a type of catapult that was used by Roman legions during sieges to launch stones and other projectiles over large distances. COBI’s model, made up of 170 pieces, is a faithful representation of this ancient weapon. The set includes a functional onager with working mechanics, allowing it to launch small objects, much like the real siege engines used by the Romans. Additionally, the set comes with a Roman legionary minifigure, complete with detailed armor and weaponry.

This set, designed on a 1:35 scale, is part of COBI's broader strategy to expand their historical collection, which also includes other periods like World War II and the Korean War. The focus on Roman military equipment is a refreshing addition, offering builders a chance to explore a different facet of history.

What Makes COBI’s Historical Sets Stand Out?

COBI has carved out a niche in the building block market by focusing on historical accuracy and educational value. Unlike other major brands that avoid realistic depictions of military equipment, COBI embraces the opportunity to educate and engage users through detailed and functional models. The Roman Onager is no exception; it not only provides a fun building experience but also serves as a miniature lesson in ancient engineering.

The Biggest Set in the History of COBI is Officially Announced!
Well, it happened. We can finally say the 1:12 scale German Tiger 131 based on the iconic tank in the Bovington Tank Museum is a reality. It is coming. It is huge. It is EXTREMELY detailed, and it is the most impressive set we at COBI have ever produced. The set (#2801) of the PzKpfw Tiger “131” Panzer VI tank in the all-new 1:12 scale comes of heels of other bar-raising sets, both in terms of size and detail, like the Bismarck way back in 2018, and even the PT-109 which brought COBI into the realm 3000-plus piece collector sets. But the release of the TIGER 131 in the newest scale represents a brand-new level of design sophistication and detail for COBI, as well as creating a new benchmark for signature sets.

With 8000 pieces, the measurables of this set alone put it in a class all by itself. When assembled the Tiger 131 is nearly 28-inches long and weighs in at a staggering 13 pounds. That alone would make for an impressive build and display piece, but the new 1:12 Tiger also takes it to another level with its intricate interior and exterior design, all-new pieces and brand-new functionalities. To start with, the interior of the tank is detailed in every section of the tank, down to the rounds for the main gun, dials, switches and knobs and even an incredibly photo-realistic engine. The exterior, too, raises the bar for the accuracy of proportions and details that only a set of this size can provide. The set also includes a large number of all-new pieces and features articulations and moving parts never seen before in any of our sets. And while we at COBI have done similar for other tanks (particularly in the 1:28 scale) the TIGER “131” represents a new pinnacle of design, photo-realism and sheer awe-inspiring size and precision.

Needless to say, this is a big moment for us at COBI and a set we’re extremely excited to officially announce, developed in conjunction with The Tank Museum in Bovington, England. Our hope is that collectors and COBI fans alike will get as much pleasure out of building and displaying the “131” as we did from designing and creating it. For all those who love tanks, engineering and history, here’s your chance to bring home a BIG piece of that history, and build it, piece by piece.
